Kaiji Episode 6 Posted on by Eddie
kaijiep6_1.gif
I capture the most inert moments.

Things are really getting tense as the remaining time drops to less than twenty minutes. As we know, Kaiji and the two fairies he is with each have two stars. They also have like thirty rocks and five scissors. However, Kaiji has an idea. After taking three of his groups stars, Kaiji convinces Kitami to relinquish his 34 papers as well. Now, it’s up to Kaiji to just wait for the opportune moment to strike.

kaijiep6_2.gif
Opportunity strikes. Will Kaiji abandon his newfound friends for a chance at survival?

However, problem strikes. All of the remaining players are refusing to play, as suffering from prior scamming had made them mistrustful. Funai, who early on had scammed Kaiji out of two of his stars, comes up with a plan to get the remaining players to agree to play. Everyone would reshuffle their cards and they would be redistributed. Alas, this could mean the destruction of Kaiji and his group, who had bought out all of the rocks and paper. What will he do?

Notes: If you notice I decided to start shrinking my screenshots, so they won’t take up so much of the screen. Also, people with smaller (bah) resolutions won’t have issues with the layout.

Anime Episode Downloads Posted on by Eddie

I would just like to let everyone know that I have preemptively uploaded two new anime: Bartender and Mononoke.

And since I’m to lazy to type up synopsis and take screenshots for each episode at this moment, I have just included the links for all of the episodes at the Downloads page. Eventually, I may add the posts for each when I decide to watch them all myself.

Anyway, that brings us up to five whole big animes on the website. I will also be uploading the entire seasons of Akagi (by the makers of Kaiji), and then Legend of the Galactic Heroes (a shwing classic space opera), if Dreamhost doesn’t cause my site to implode on itself by then.

Additionally, be sure to attempt to post on the forums, as I may be more inclined to add content when we actually get visitors. Also, if you want to be a writer for this site, we pay in lolcat images.

Bookmooch - Recycle Your Books Posted on by Eddie

bookmooch_logo.gif

Bookmooch is a website in which a person can trade away their old books that they no longer read for books that they do wish to read. Here’s how it works. Adding books to your inventory gets you a tenth of a point per book added. With a full point you can request another book from a separate user. When a user requests one of your books, you get a point from them. You only have to pay shipping on books you send out. So essentially, you are getting a book you want to read for the cost of an old book + shipping, which, if you don’t collect your books and just read them, works out very nicely. You add books to your wishlist and you recieve an e-mail when one of those books are available for mooching.

I thought that I would tell others about this site, as it has proven quite useful for me. I have used it to trade away a lot of my old books and manga that I don’t want for books I do want. Personally I’ve given away 45 books, and received almost 60. While I believe Bookmooch is the best of it’s kind, there are other sites similar to it that offer more than just books:

PaperBack Swap
Similar to Bookmooch, this site also provides DVD and CD swapping sites, though they cost a small fee. Apparently they have a larger userbase than Bookmooch, however I found Bookmooch somewhat simpler to use and more user-friendly. The one advantage to PaperBack Swap that I did see was the ability to buy points for books, in the event you didn’t want to trade away books of your own.

Movie Moocher
Designed for College Campuses specifically, this site is for lending DVDs to other students on campus, rather than trade them away. Rather than using Blockbuster, you just lend someone a DVD and they are to return it when they have watched it. This site, however, is very new, and could use some work on the usability. Perhaps in the future it will improve, and get a larger userbase.

Moyashimon 03: Bacteria Within Posted on by Eddie

moyashimonep3_1.gif
The third installment of Tales of Agriculture subjects us again to more interesting facts surrounding fermentation, which appears to be a large motif, given the subject matter of the show. This time its a skate fish (or ray), and Sawaki yet again appears to bear the brunt of the stench.

I’m really enjoying the show so far. It’s fairly laid back, the facts and subjects are interesting, and who could resist this:

A day in the life of sake brewing.

The art and animation quality of this show is also excellent. Even just looking at the characters is enjoyable.

Kaiji Episode 5 Posted on by Eddie

kaijiep5_1.gif
Kaiji and his G-unit are still in financial (in terms of stars) trouble, as they have been for the last four episodes. They are down to one star each, and a large pile of rocks mixed with a few other cards. They only have 45 or so minutes left before the game ends.

kaijiep5_2.gif
They’ve been approached by these guys, and through some amazing persuasiveness, Kaiji convinces them to play him, for the ripe sum of 3 stars. It’s do or die in this episode, so hold on to your Japanese boob balls.

Bamboo Blade - Faces of Death Posted on by Eddie

bambooep4_1.gif
TENTACLES

At first I was going to attempt to psychoanalyze this episode, making some reference to outward appearance and mental state, but I realized that the most complex idea within this episode is that Miya-Miya likes hitting people, perhaps as a result of abuse as a child. Yet, she acts completely opposite to her personality because of her love for Dan-kun. Additionally, I realized that I can’t even spell psycology(sp). Enjoy Sayako’s hairdo.

bambooep4_2.gif
Kirino as usual provides the most exhilarating screenshots. MOE MOE MOE MOE MOE.

bambooep4_3.gif
Miya’s real personality leaks out for a short moment in this revealing facial expression.

Overall, the focus of this episode is on Miya and Sayako. If you remember from the last episode, Miya is somewhat blunt with Sayako. Sayako returns to the club while Miya is training, and Miya avoids her, due to embarrassment or guilt or otherwise…

Kaiji Episode 4: 30 Rocks from the Scum Posted on by Eddie

kaijiep4_1.gif
I pick the best screenshots so you don’t have to.

Episode continues from where it left off, leaving our friend Kaiji and his two scumbag companions up shit avenue without a bus ticket. Things are looking grim for the three, with only five stars between them and approximately no cards.

kaijiep4_2.gif
However, Kaiji manages to come up with another interesting idea. It seems that if he wasn’t a loser he’d be a good chess player. Hint: There are no scissors or paper in that pile of cards he is holding. The plan seems foolproof, but Kaiji has a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach (and we know how those usually end up).

A Bit of Noise -Jared and the Hats Posted on by Allen

So, I found a bit of noise that some of you might enjoy. Personally I fancy the record and in my opinion the tracks to pay attention to would have to be 2, 6, 8, and 10. The fact that these are all even numbers is purely coincidence. Oh and finding this oddity in a physical CD format has proven quite the challenge, so if your looking to buy something more substantial then a few mp3’s it would be best not to get your hopes up. Enjoy!

Guitar Hero III Sucks More Than My Review Of It Posted on by Eddie

Well, perhaps. However, it doesn’t even compare to any of its predecessors. Apparently our friends at Activision have dropped the ball.

gh3drummer.gif
New GH3 Drummer

First off, the graphics. Not much to say here, though I don’t like the star power meter, I find it harder to see my Star Power while playing. It seems that they made the notes really bright and annoying, and removed any and all contrast from the rest of the interface so I can’t see anything. Additionally, though the character graphics are spiffed up a bit for the newer generation systems, they’re nothing special. I will say that the drummer is a machine. Machine, not in that he has high endurance, but his movements resemble that of Johnny 5 from Short Circuit. Also, despite his huge chin, the vocalist isn’t too good at lip synching either.

gh3sound.gif
Audiophile-level Sound Quality

Looks aside, the real flaws lie within the gameplay itself. While there isn’t much different with the way songs are played from the previous version, the songs themselves are shitty. First off, pretty much every song sounds the same, plays the same, looks the same. I couldn’t tell the difference between any of the European Invasion songs, as well as half of the rest of them. Additionally, the songs are transcribed poorly. In Guitar Hero 2 you had a great tracklist, with unique songs that were fun to play. In this, the songs are boring repetitive two or three note chords with little variation. There are only a few notable exceptions to this, including the songs by Muse, Eric Johnson, Metallica and Dragonforce. Even the Tenacious D song was not any fun to play.

Sound wise, this game is terrible. At first, I thought it was just the settings on the TV or something, but nope. Probably a combination between an attempt to achieve a realistic “Live Sound” and the fact that the cover band used for the game was actually fronted by the 13 year old son of one of the developers, trying to “make it big” after taking approximately three guitar lessons. Instead, all I can hear is some indecipherable trebly noise mixed with the same yelling crowd looping over and over.

If you are among the unlucky saps who bought the game already, here is a suggestion: Keep the Les Paul, because admittedly, it’s worth more than the game, and you can use it for Rockband/GH2 (maybe). Tape the GH3 disc to your ass and use it to make playdoh shit cylinders, because that is all that is useful for.

Moyashimon - Sake Sadness Posted on by Eddie

In case anyone was wondering, Sake Sadness isn’t really the title of the second episode of the anime. I just think that it is more accurate than Three Billion Yen Aggie Life. Well, the real title might be more precise now that I think of it, but this is about significant digits.

moyashimonep2_1.gif
Anyway, Sawaki helps to find out the source of these evil lactobacillus fructivorans, or in common terms, “sake-spoiling bacteria.”

I would continue a plot synopsis but then I realize that most people aren’t here for my spoiler, but rather the episode itself. Anyway, there are much better synopses already available (and with more screenshots too!).

I am detecting heavy Yakitate!! Japan vibes from this show.
